Fall Appeal 2024 - Fort Mackinac Soldiers’ Barracks

December 2024

During the winter of 2024-2025, the Fort Mackinac Soldiers’ Barracks will undergo a thorough transformation.  Originally built in 1859, this historic structure is the largest building in the fort, and currently houses multiple exhibits, a temporary theater, and restrooms.  All these elements will be completely overhauled and upgraded to provide visitors with new, engaging, and comfortable experiences while exploring Fort Mackinac. 

Mackinac Associates Welcomes New Staff Member

December 9, 2024

Mackinac Associates welcomed a new staff member in December as Stephanie Fortino of St. Ignace took on the role of Membership Associate. She joins Chief Development Officer Michelle Walk in supporting the organization and its members. Fortino joins Mackinac State Historic Parks following more than a decade in local journalism, having most recently served as editor of The St. Ignace News and Mackinac Island Town Crier. Originally from Genesee County, Fortino has enjoyed visiting MSHP sites since she was a child and has been blessed to call the Straits of Mackinac “home” since 2013.

John Kruse Elected to Mackinac Associates Board of Trustees at Annual Member Meeting

John Kruse of Auburn, Indiana, and Mackinac Island was elected to the Mackinac Associates Board of Trustees at the annual member meeting August 17. He replaces Joan Slater of St. Ignace who did not seek reelection. Kruse is an entrepreneur who grew up visiting Mackinac State Historic Parks sites during annual trips to the Straits Area during childhood. He and his wife, Abby, recently became stewards of a cottage on the East Bluff of Mackinac Island and are enjoying becoming part of the community.

In addition to Kruse’s election to the board, the annual meeting also featured a presentation by Park Naturalist Kyle Bagnall, who gave a talk at the Huron Road Pavillion behind Fort Mackinac. Mackinac Associates Treasurer Brian Bailey filled in for board President Todd Callewaert and highlighted the generous support of members during the past year.

The next week, the board reelected officers for another term: Callewaert, president, Skip Young, vice president, Bailey, treasurer, and Nancy Porter, secretary.
